Valentine's Day: Love It or Hate It
We are only two days away from the Hallmark holiday: Valentine's Day. Although January seemed to go on forever, February seems to be flying by. (Maybe it's just because I'm really looking forward to Saint Patty's Day...)
To be honest, I have never liked the idea Valentine's Day. I'm sorry to sound like a complete hater but that's what I am. Sure, I LOVE decorating my house in pink hearts and having lots of chocolate laying around, but the idea of Valentine's Day has always rubbed me the wrong way. Single people feel excluded (which they shouldn't) and couples spend so much money on fancy restaurants or extravagent gifts (which they also shouldn't). If you need a holiday to take your loved one out, spend all the money you don't have to show them off and you don't do this any other time of the year, who are you REALLY trying to impress?
Love and gratitude for your partner should be forever and constant. Not a one and done on a made-up holiday. Buy her flowers on a random Thursday. Give him a new watch when he least expects it. The surprise is better then anyway.
On the other hand, over the past couple of years I have seen the idea of Valentine's Day taken a turn into what I think is the right direction. With a huge thank you to Leslie Knope and the rest of the Parks and Rec crew Galentine's Day becomes more and more prominent every year. Women cheering on women and girls celebrating their friendship and (most of the time) getting drunk. How is that NOT fun and amazing?! I just wish there could be other holidays that celebrated the idea.
Valentine's Day has also turned into a time to show yourself some love. It takes energy to love others, but sometimes it takes an extra amount of enery to show yourself the love that you need and deserve. I have LOVED seeing so many people take on the notion of, "This Valentine's Day I'm loving myself" with their face masks on and drinks in hand. Sometimes all it takes is a little bit of relaxation. However, if you're in need of some other ideas to show love to the person who needs it most, check this out.
